Diesel Engine Maintenance

Diesel Engine Maintenance is Vital to Performance

Maintaining Your Diesel Engine

Diesel engines do not require the ignition tune-ups and major repairs of gasoline engines, but they need regular, low-cost maintenance. Luckily, most types of diesel are designed for easy do-it-yourself maintenance without investing too much time or money. Here is a simple Diesel Engine maintenance guide.

Cooling System

As most mechanics know, diesel engines run much hotter than gasoline engines because diesel fuel requires much more heat to ignite. If your diesel overheats, it could be the end of your engine, so cooling system maintenance is crucial when you are performing your diesel engine maintenance. Always make sure you are topped up on coolant and do not ignore the early-warning systems on the dash. If your vehicle overheats, stop it at once and consult a professional.

Air System

Diesel engines love to breathe and, as a result, use a lot of air to keep them cool and to burn clean. Keep your air filters clean or replace your air filter often to keep steady airflow.

Oil Fuel Filters

It is known that diesel fuel contains several contaminants and acidic components that wear on your engine. To combat this problem, diesel engines typically have more filtration for fuel and oil. Filters and additives capture these particles and keep them from gumming up the works. It is important to replace your oil and fuel filters during your diesel engine maintenance. Many types of diesel have two fuel filters, so be aware to check/change them both.

Gaskets

Diesel engines shake a lot, which may knock things loose. When you are doing your diesel engine maintenance, make sure to check all mounting bolts to make sure nothing has become dislodged, and make sure your gaskets have not sprung any leaks. I had a Ford Power Stroke that I noticed suddenly has a drop in performance and fuel mileage. A trip to my diesel shop proved the intake plenums had developed a leak. After a simple repair, it was clear the intake plenums had been leaking a little for a long time. The performance increase was amazing, and the fuel mileage jumped dramatically.

Synthetic Oil

When it comes to oil, I highly recommend AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil. AMSOIL diesel oil keeps it at the elevated temperatures of a diesel engine where conventional oil often breaks down. AMSOIL gives you the mind knowing you are protected in the hot summers, but due to the low pour point in wintry weather, AMSOIL has you covered as well; AMSOIL synthetic oil also contains alkaline additives that neutralize the acidic components of diesel fuel. For your diesel, synthetic oil better protects your engine and improves performance.

As a plus, check out the service intervals of AMSOIL Diesel Oil in the online shopping cart. You will see that using AMSOIL  for extended drain intervals gives you more time on the road, saving you even more money.

Warranty Secure

When it comes to extending your drain intervals or using a premium synthetic mot oil, the common question is, “what about my warranty on my new car or truck?” The great news is when you use AMSOIL Diesel Motor Oil as recommended, you are Warranty Secure. Read about the AMSOIL warranty.
