Stay Safe While Riding Your ATV

Riding your ATV out on the trails can be a ton of fun. Whether you're an experienced ATV rider or just getting into it, safety is hugely important. While some states set strict rules when it comes to ATV use, others are a lot more free. Either way, Stokes Abode in Tumwater has some tips to keep you safe on your ATV excursions.

Meet the Age Requirements

While it's perfectly legal for unlicensed teens to drive ATVs in most states, it is recommended that you be at least 16 years old. The physical demands of riding an ATV can be intense and most likely too difficult for someone younger than 16. The quick turns and speeding up and slowing down that are common while on an ATV require quick decision making that inexperienced drivers might struggle with.

Wear the Right Gear

It is very important that you wear appropriate gear that will keep you safe out on the trails. Make sure to wear a helmet and goggles if your helmet doesn't provide eye protection. Just like riding a motorcycle, you should wear long pants and long sleeves. Boots are the recommended type of footwear for riding an ATV. Wearing the appropriate clothing will help you avoid scrapes and road burn should your ATV tip over or suffer some kind of accident.

Follow the Rules

While riding your ATV, make sure you know the rules of the trail. Don't go too fast because this can cause your vehicle to become unstable and can lead to accidents. Get to know the rules in your state regarding age, carrying passengers and safety certification requirements before you head out on your ATV.
